Vending Machines

Vending machine inspection.

A vending machine is defined as a self service device that automatically dispenses, on the insertion of currency, tokens or similar means a predetermined unit serving of food either in bulk or in packages without having to be replenished after each use.  Locations that have vending machines that vend perishable hot or cold items such as sandwiches or ice cream treats must be licensed by the local health jurisdiction in which the machines are operated. Additionally, any machine that performs in-machine processing of foods, such as coffee or French fries must be licensed.

Vending machine locations are defined in 3717.01 of the Ohio Revised Code as an area or room where one or more vending machines are installed and operated. Machines separated by more than one hundred fifty feet from each other are considered a separate licensable location.

Some of the things that will be checked during a vending  location inspection are the temperatures of cold units, making sure frozen foods are frozen,  cleanliness of the machine, and if the emergency shut off is operational in case of power interruption or if the temperatures in the cold/frozen units are higher than 41°F.

Sanitarians will inspect 50% of a company’s vending machine locations at least once annually. Clermont County licenses over 50 locations.
