Fall Prevention for Businesses
One in three individuals over the age of 65 falls annually. Most of these falls occur in and around the home; however approximately 30% of falls occur outside the home. The Clermont County Senior Safety Program provides educational material on preventing falls in the home and coordinates home safety checks and the installation of home safety aids. Many of the same tips for reducing falls in the home can be applied to businesses.
Here are some thoughts on keeping your place of business safe from injuries:
- Flooring: Floors should be kept dry and not heavily waxed. Avoid high glare finishes. Use rubber matting and rugs with skid free backing and avoid loose carpeting. Clean up spills as soon as possible and use wet floor signs until the area is dry.
- Stairs: Stairs should be well lit. Replace worn treads and consider placing non-slip adhesive strips on the edge of steps.
- Chairs: Avoid chairs with wheels or legs that protrude into walking areas.
- Walkways: Keep walkways dry when possible and free of ice accumulation. Curbs can be painted contrasting colors so they are easily visible. Keep exterior walkways well lit.
