How to Apply for a Private Water System

The Clermont County General Health District reviews and approves the installation of all private water systems to ensure that is has the proper components to provide safe drinking water.

Applicants must submit the following information along with a completed Application Form which is available from the Health District office. The application cannot be initiated without all required information and applicants can avoid being turned away by checking that all needed documentation is available.

 

  • Site Plan:  You will need to bring to our office a site plan of the property.  If you are building a new home in most instances the site plan used for the Application for New Construction of a Household Sewage Treatment System will suffice.  On the site plan it should be clearly marked where you would like to have the private water system located.  It is best to apply for your Private Water System at the same time as you apply for your Household Sewage Treatment System in order that a thorough review can be performed.
  • Registered Contractor:  When you make the application for your private water system you will need to provide the name of the contractor that you have chosen to do the work.  Please be sure that the contractor is registered and bonded as a Private Water System contractor with the Ohio Department of Health.   
  • Marking the Site:  Other than adhering to setbacks established in the OAC 3701-28-10(G) the homeowner can determine the location of the private system. The Health District recommends that the cistern be set in a location that is easily accessed by a water hauling truck just in case need water delivered to your home. Please clearly mark the location of the proposed private water system at the site so the Health District staff can evaluate the system for meeting the minimum setback requirements.
